Activity: Introduction to Youth Activism and YAN

Objective:To introduce young people and their relatives to youth activism, YAN values, projects and activities.

Materials: Photographs, videos, posters, flyers or presentations about YAN.

Duration: 20 – 30 minutes

Introduction to YAN at the first session of a project in Charlestown Computer Clubhouse, Boston

Procedure:

  • Facilitators should start this session by asking the participants what is it that attracted them to the meeting, if they know any social activist, and what they think youth activism is
  • Facilitators should talk about the goals of YAN and, if possible, present a slide show highlighting past work done by different YAN groups
  • At the end of the meeting people should have a clear idea about what YAN is, what is required for a person to be part of YAN, and when meetings are going to happen.

Comments:

  • This activity is a good precursor to starting a YAN project in your organization and provides people with a good idea of the group and activities they are going to be involved with. It also provides a great opportunity to subscribe people, discuss date/time for meetings, etc.
  • If possible, setup the Introduction to YAN meeting as a community event open for everyone and try to involve existing young activists in the event’s organization. If possible, invite older YAN members talk about their experiences, recognize their efforts, and use the meeting as a means to get the support from families and other members of the local community.
