Activity:
Generating ideas for a project topic and voting for
the most relevant social issue
Objectives:
- To encourage the
participants to think about the issues that affect
their community
- To select the most
relevant issue for the project
Materials: Neighborhood
perception forms, markers, chart paper and post-its
Duration:
15 minutes to 1/2 an hour
Procedure:
- Ask the participants
to fill out a neighborhood perception form at the
beginning of the session. Part of the form should
ask them to identify at least three things that they
like and three other things that they dislike about
their neighborhood.
- Once everybody finishes,
the dislike entries from all the participants should
be listed down in the flipchart paper and displayed
for everyone to start voting.
- In silence, each young
activist should write in the small piece of paper
the items of the list that he/she considers the most
relevant.
- The facilitator should
then collect the pieces of paper and count the number
of people who voted in each entry of the list
- The entry receiving
most votes gets selected as the most relevant issue
and the topic of the YAN project
Comments:
The downside of this activity is that many times the
participants list social issues from their most recent
memory and the issues may not be of broader social concern.
Voting can be used in any activity that requires group
decision making.· In case more than one entry
receives a large number of votes, either all those entries
get selected or an additional election may be held to
make the results more explicit. Depending on the group,
it may be OK to select more than one issue for the Analysis
phase of the project lifecycle.
