On Saturday, September 23, 1995, some 3,000 people from the northeastern United States descended upon a ski lodge tucked away in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to come together and dance to eighteen hours' worth of the electronic folk music that has come to be known as techno.
From 6:00 pm to noon the following day, the landscape of the Butternut Ski
Basin was transformed into a playground containing four large dancing areas
(each with an independent sound system), a variety of concession tents, and a
sheltered "chill-out" space. The event, dubbed Green by its
promoters, was announced on the Northeast American Rave Calendar
web-page, a.k.a. The Rave-o-matic,
as well as on the NE-Raves (Northeastern U.S.
Raves) Mailing List. A special meeting area was also set aside for
those attendees who were subscribers to the NE-Raves Mailing List,
thus allowing people who had previously known other NE-Ravers only
through electronic mail to finally meet each other in person.
