ShAir at ISID Lifelogging Field Experiments

Nov. 2013 - Mar. 2014

Photo Sharing among Overseas Travelers for Social Relationship Analysis

We participated, as a technical partner, in two field experiments conducted by Information Services International-Dentsu, Ltd. (ISID), where activities of a group of tourists were logged using GPS and other sensors for a week to analyze the social relationships between the tourists. The tourists were 15 French officials visiting Japan in the first experiment and 16 Japanese high school students visiting Germany and France in the second. One of the ISID's ideas was to quantify how much word-of-mouth influence one person has on another person from the logs, which could be a useful piece of information in delivering appropriate digital contents and services to people through their real-world social networks.

In order to digitally assist word-of-mouth communication between the tourists and to record relevant data, the Photo Share app was provided for the tourists. While traveling, they took hundreds of pictures to share what they thought was interesting to see and do on the way, and the app recorded which picture was shared with whom at what time. The data revealed not only how often and how long any two tourists were together, but also whether or not a person went to a particular place after pictures of that place were shared by another person who had already visited there. The experiments provided us with opportunities for testing the ShAir platform in real-life usage situations, and showed that the platform could also be used as a tool for logging social relationship data.
