welcome to my online portfolio. please have a look around.
my name is mike fabio. i was born and raised in edina, minnesota, a suburb of minneapolis. somewhere around 5th grade i became completely fascinated with music. i began playing double bass, and bass guitar soon after.
thanks to talented and dedicated music teachers, i grew to love all kinds of music. i have played in orchestras, jazz big bands, rock bands, and chamber music ensembles.
after purchasing my first computer with bar mitzvah money, i became hooked on computer music. i spent countless hours making rudimentary compositions with even more rudimentary software (see my very early compositions on the
compositions page).
of course technology has improved quite a bit since then, and my compositional technique has improved as well. thanks to the work of engineers all over the world, computer music has become easy enough for children to make, and professionals have benefited from the vastly improved ease of use and palette of musical sound of music software and hardware. as a means of returning this favor, i decided to become an engineer myself.
after high school i attended the massachusetts institute of technology. while there i spent a great deal of time soul searching and deciding how i could best use my creativity and skills. after a few years of foot-dabbling in computer science, though, i decided to concentrate on my true love: music. after all, there is no better way to change the world than through the arts.
being at mit allowed me the opportunity to explore computer music in a way that no other university could. while i learned about the history of early music, brazilian hip hop, and avant-garde improvisation, i was also learning about advanced algorithms for score following, harmonic extrapolation, and physical modeling synthesis. try learning that at juilliard.
while at mit, i spent a great deal of time
researching at the mit media lab. i worked on several large scale projects there and performed across the united states and europe. i even
published a paper or two.
in addition, i have spent a huge portion of my academic and free time writing music. please have a listen to my
compositions. i hope you enjoy.
