Curriculum Vitae of Pattie Maes

Summary

I obtained the degree of Doctor in Computer Science with the greatest distinction in March 1987 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, on the basis of a dissertation about Computational Reflection. From 1987 until 1991, I held a permanent position as Senior Research Scientist for the Belgian National Science Foundation. During that time, I was associated with the AI Laboratory of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) (directed by Prof. Dr. Luc Steels), where I led the project "A Cognitive Architecture for an Autonomous Agent". From 1989 until 1991, my Belgian NSF appointment was temporarily replaced by a Visiting Professor appointment at MIT's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and later a joint Research Scientist appointment at MIT's Media Laboratory and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. In the fall of 1991, I accepted a tenure-track faculty position at the MIT Media Laboratory.

I have an extensive list of conference contributions, books, and publications, some of which have won awards. I have been a program committee member for international conferences, such as PAAM, AAAI, and ECAI. I was the Program Chair for the Fourth International Conference on Simulation of Adaptive Behavior (SAB96), held from September 9-13, 1996 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I was also the Program Chair for the First International Conference on Autonomous Agents (Agents-97), which was held from February 5-8, 1997 in Marina del Rey, California. I have served as reviewer for numerous other conferences and for journals, such as the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research. I am also on the editorial board of the journal, Artificial Life and am associate editor for the MIT Press journal, Adaptive Behavior.

In the past, I have worked on Intelligent Office Systems, Problem Solving Strategies, Object-Oriented Knowledge Representation Languages and Computational Reflection. My current interests are in the area of Architectures for Autonomous Agents. My goal is to study Intelligence through the modeling and construction of intelligent agents that live in dynamic, unstructured environments. My recent work is on a theory for Action Selection and Learning in an Autonomous Agent using a distributed model. This theory (and the corresponding algorithms) has been successfully demonstrated in simulated and robotic agents.

Finally, I was a founder of Firefly Network, Inc. in Boston, Massachusetts - one of the first companies to commercialize software agent technology.  Firefly was acquired by Microsoft in April of 1998.
