About the Project

The Nepal Ghatta Project began the summer of 2000. This web site (including the posted articles and papers) is an attempt to pass on the knowledge and information gained during its course. Please e-mail nathan@media.mit.edu with any questions or comments.

The project was conceived of by Nathan Eagle while in Nepal on a Fulbright scholarship. A Stanford mechanical engineer already interested in domestic power generation, he became excited about the ghatta's potential as an inexpensive, rural generator. He views this project as a baby step towards his grander scheme of ubiquitous bandwidth on a global scale.

Homeless and unemployed in Silicon Valley, Ben Olding was easily convinced to leave his down & out lifestyle behind to join Nathan in Nepal. Ben brought his considerable talents of stating the obvious and avoiding rent to the project. He still is unsure what the phrase "appropriate technology" means exactly, but figures it at least doesn't have anything to do with the web.
