CONCEPT
Where do we think we are in our bodies when we encounter new, sensorially provocative forms of technology? Do such sites create a condition that would enable a new sensibilities to emerge? Can these provocative moments linger and eventually become habituated in new behaviors? Is it possible to take pleasure in this new awareness, in order to design interfaces and artwork that keep this door to new perceptions ajar? The idea behind this chair is to create a personal object with simple life-like qualities that can provoke a visceral awareness of the body. The Provocative Chair will engage concerns of behavior and sensation; to this end it will learn the simple behavioral patterns of the sitter and it will react with subtle signals.
The Chair's structure will be made up of a thick wool flannel which will be perforated to hold a grid of molded silicone cushions. As the sitter moves in the chair the chair will record these movements and, over a period of time, the chair will react (change in temperature and/or vibrations) to simple repetetive behaviors. The silicone cushions would have a quiltedquality, so that various interactions could happen at different locations in the 'fabric'. The silicone molds could be embedded with sensors (piezo actuators and transducers, peltier device, LED's). The arm rests will also have a silicone detail meshed with the aluminum structure. The silicone area of the arm rests could also have touch sensors at particular locations.
