media lab projects

Second Messenger Joan Morris DiMicco, Walter Bender (2003-2005)
My Phd research focused on understanding how different tools can help groups improve their interaction processes. The ultimate goal is to create tools that encourage groups to include a more diverse set of viewpoints in their discussions, in order to promote higher quality group decision-making.

The interfaces I built as part of my PhD research use visualization to reveal social patterns within a group's face-to-face communication. The theory is that by providing information about social dynamics, a group will be able to reflect and improve upon its interaction patterns.

Conductive Chat Joan Morris DiMicco, Andrew Fiore, Vidya Lakshmipathy (2002)
Conductive Chat is an instant messenger client that incorporates your GSR (galvanic skin response) into the text you type, resulting in a text-based conversation enhanced with your emotional arousal.

Voting for Group Decisions

Joan Morris DiMicco, Dan Ariely (2001-2002)
Whether it is voting for president or deciding from where the office should order lunch, group decision-making leaves people with varying degrees of satisfaction with the decision. One of the difficulties in current voting mechanisms is the inability to express complexities of opinions. This project works to introduce new voting mechanisms which will maximize individual satisfaction or social welfare.

Learning Curve

Joan Morris DiMicco, Pattie Maes (2000-2001, My Master's Thesis)
In an electronic marketplace, where software agents make strategic decisions for buyers and sellers, how can a seller make sense of it all? My research uses a market simulator to study different agent selling strategies in an increasingly complex marketplace. My goal is to discover the relevant factors in determining successful market strategies and to build an interface to this system powering the seller in a dynamically priced market.

Sardine Joan Morris DiMicco, Pattie Maes (1999-2001)
The Sardine System presents a new model for airline ticket bidding, demonstrating our vision for interfaces that facilitate negotiation between buyers and sellers.

Impulse Joan Morris, Jim Youll, Pattie Maes (1999-2001)
Impulse explores a scenario in which e-commerce meets 'brick-and-mortar' commerce through a system of buying and selling agents representing individual buyers and sellers that engage in multi-parameter negotiation and run on wireless mobile devices.
ABP Joan Morris, Martha Chang, Wilson Lee (2000)
This class project was to design a family based messaging system for the home of the future, using the principles of FCE (Future Computing Environments).
Vicinity Chat Joan Morris, Chris Lucas, Alexander De Reitzes, Judith Donath (2000)
This project examines what happens at the boundary between the physical world and the virtual world when a traditional messaging interface from the virtual world is adapted to connect people in proximate location in the physical world.
StreetWise Jim Youll, Joan Morris, Raffi Krikorian, Pattie Maes (2000)
This projects presents an implementation of one aspect of the Impulse vision. Called Streetwise, it is a scenario demonstrating a mobile device using location-aware queries to digitally augment and explore the physical world.
InShop Daniele De Francesco, Raffi C. Krikorian, Joan Morris, Jeffrey C. Mellen (2000)
The high-level goal of this project is to create a community-oriented application using hand-held wireless devices. Specifically, this is an application for use in a grocery store which allows shoppers to swap cooking recipes based on who they are, what they've put in their shopping cart, and what they are looking at in the store.
