My interest in interspecies communication and comparative behavior is long-standing; nevertheless, I chose at first to train for a career in chemistry and chemical physics. While a student at Harvard, I did however attend all possible seminars and some courses on the communicative behavior of animals, avian biology, and, toward the end of my graduate career, on language acquisition in humans. During this period, I realized that my principal interest was indeed in animal behavior and comparative psychology, rather than in theoretical chemistry. I did complete my Ph.D. with Professor William N. Lipscomb in June, 1976; the research involved mathematical modeling of chemical structures and reactions. I then worked for a short time as a postdoctoral assistant in order to prepare the final portion of my thesis for publication. At the end of July, 1976, I began a full-time reading program in the fields of ethology, psychology, and neurobiology; I attended seminars and a course in child language acquisition at Harvard.
In January, 1977, I moved with my then-husband to Purdue University, where he had accepted an assistant professorship. I continued my extensive program involving reading and seminar and conference attendance; with space borrowed from members of the biology department and the purchase of an African Grey parrot, I began (in July, 1977) to conduct experiments on interspecies communi-cation and conceptual behavior in a psittacine subject. On September 1, 1979, I received formal appointment as a Research Associate in Biology at Purdue; on January 1, 1982, I was appointed to a part-time teaching position in the Depart-ment of Psychology for the Spring semester.
On July 1, 1984, I accepted a position as visiting assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at Northwestern University. This position continued until January, 1991. At that time, I assumed an associate professorship in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona; I received tenure in May, 1994.
