Q1. I have a question about rcs, the revision control system

A1. As much as I like rcs, this list has nothing to do with it. rcs here stands for "random cool stuff"@mit

Q2. What is this list for?

A2. rcs is a low-traffic mailing list with the purpose of informing list members about random cool stuff that's happening in the MIT vicinity, things that the poster thinks people on the list would definitely want to go to unless they have something much better to do.
I personally often feel that if something cool is happening, I want to know about it. However, most lists that supposedly serve events of interests have a lot of junk on them that is not really cool stuff, but just people trying to promote their thing.
So maybe this is nothing more than a snobby version of those 'arts-events' type lists, that are just too long for me to read (although i always plan to get back to them).

Q3. But what is 'cool'? Everyone has their own idea of what cool stuff is.

A3. True, 'cool' is different things to different people, which is why rcs should probably contain only like-minded people.

Q4. OK, cool like what?

A4. Basically things that are exceptional, out of the ordinary, and you should consider yourself lucky to happen to be so close to them occurring.
Some events that come to mind (and actually sparked the creation of rcs) are the recent one-off screening of the shot-by-shot remake of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in Boston, Ben Rubin's "Listening Post" at MIT, RESFEST at the Brattle, and the east-coast breakdancing summit that was held at W20.
But that's just a random list and you don't have to agree with all of it, just with the general jist.

Q5. My band is cool!

A5. (a) this is not a question, and (b) this list is neither interested the weekly event listing for Boston, nor in announcements for every fringe show in town.
I support and love fringe shows, but one of the concepts that this list was founded upon was that -- if the announcements will be sparse, recipients might pay more attention to them. So only exceptional stuff, please.
