digital water pavilion, zaragoza world expo (2008)

architectural and animation design; authoring, control, and simulation software.

in collaboration with the m.i.t senseable cities lab and carlo ratti associati architects

The digital water pavilion is a structure built for the 2008 world expo in zaragoza, featuring walls made up of digitally controlled falling water.

Due to the unique material properties of water walls, the spatial structure of the pavilion can be adjusted, and the walls can be comprised of solids, voids, and moving textures. these textures can be as simple as stripes, and as complex as multiply overlaid algorithmic patterns and text.

Responsibilities in this project included architectural design of the wall configurations, and graphic and animation design of the wall textures. In collaboration with Andrea Vaccari and Andres Sevtsuk, we have developed both a live control and an offline authoring system, allowing for the design, storage, and excution of an vast set of wall and texture configurations.
