| A device for "recording" and "playing back" drumstick motions involved in percussion performance. It is being used in a serious of experiments designed to test the effect of physical guidance on motor learning. | An acoustic drum outfitted with a system of magnetics which are used to induce pushing and pulling forces on a drumstick and ideally guiding a player through correct motions. | Statistical models of expressive piano performance. Prior work (Master's thesis at UCSC) used hidden Markov models and I am now exploring several new techniques. |

| A bass guitar with an onboard MIDI sequencer and LEDs embedded in the fretboard used to indicate finger positions in real time. | Work with Alex Vasilescu on how multilinear (tensor) algebra can be used to formulate a generative model of the head-related transfer function for analysis and synthesis of realistic 3D audio. |

| An interface for creating chordal sequences that abstacts away individual notes in favor of higher level music theory concepts (root, inversion, chord type, etc.) | A glove that uses an ultrasound transducer and vibrotactile feedback to allow a user to 'feel' their environment. | A bowed instrument resembing a cello in many ways, but tuned like a tenor bass (ADGC). |
| Hammer Dulcimer | MusicBox | |

| A hammered dulcimer with a MIDI retrofit. MIDI noteon/noteoff messages can be used to drive solenoid plungers which strike the strings of the dulcimer. | A Java applet that allows you to compose music via 3D Lindenmayer systems. Musical parameters can be mapped to serval aspects of the systems structure. |
