In January 2011 I participated in the Monkey Madness competition organized by Hasbro here at the lab. The aim of the competition was to come up with new ways to think about Hasbro's classic Barrel of Monkeys game. It occurred to me that the Monkeys in the game are rather flat. What if we could create a more 3D monkey? How about... a tetrahedral monkey? I worked with fellow grad student Amit Zoran to do just that. First, I made prototypes using model magic and play-doh, and then rendered a 3D model in processing.
Next, Amit created a detailed 3D model and made this lovely full render (click to see a larger version). Finally, we 3D printed 9 copies of the tetrahedral monkey, and made a nice chain out of them!
