Reflective Mirror / Shopping Mirror
with David Bouchard, Sajid Sadi, Pattie Maes

A graphic display is embedded in a mirror, so that the piece of furniture can show digital information. The information is displayed peripherally, in a subtle and unobtrusive way, to make it easy to ignore the extra content and preserve the original function of the mirror. Two projects were developed on this hardware platform.

Reflective Mirror
The mirror not only reflects our image, but it provides information to let us reflect upon our lifestyle. For example, the mirror can show how much time over the last week we spent in locations that carry special significance (e.g. office/home) or how much we have been communicating with certain friends and relatives. By making this information salient to the users every morning when they get ready in front of the mirror, we hope to have a positive influence towards a more balanced lifestyle.

Shopping Mirror
Shopping for clothes is a social experience: we take friends with us to receive suggestions on how new garments fit us. The shopping mirror extends this paradigm to remote friends: when users enter the changing room the shop's mirror connects to their mobile phone and gets their "shopping buddies list": this is an address book that contains the instant messaging contacts of friends that we generally want to receive clothing suggestions from. The mirror then displays icons of the friends who are on-line at the moment. By touching icons on the mirror-display users can select friends and send pictures of themselves trying new clothes and pre-defined messages. Friends will receive pictures and messages on their instant messaging client or on their mobile phone. Using the same interface friends can send back comments that are also displayed on the mirror.
