11th International Conference on Multimodal Interfaces

November 2-6, Cambridge, MA

Call for Papers

The study of human behavior has always intrigued social scientists interested in enhancing effectiveness and individual well-being in social systems. By using sensors (cameras, microphones, accelerometers, etc.) and mobile phones that provide objective, quantitative measurements of social behavior, we now can automatically measure individual and collective patterns of behavior; predict human behavior from unconscious social signals; identify social affinity among individuals; and enhance social interactions by providing real-time feedback.

In this workshop we will discuss the state-of-the-art in sensors and sensing modalities to

capture human behavior and social dynamics; how to model, simulate, and understand social

dynamics from sensor data; and finally how to generate feedback aimed at improving social

systems (individuals, small groups, organizations), creating a closed feedback loop.

We will also discuss state-of-the-art human behavior models that use phone data (i.e. location, proximity, call logs, audio, application logs), aspects of users’ behavior or aggregate interactions that we can  learn or infer, and behaviors that can be represented using existing or new quantitative models.

We are looking forward to your submission and participation in the workshop. Following are the key areas of interest.

- Sensors for social computing

- Group behavior modeling using sensors

- Social systems simulations that incorporate sensor data

- Sensor-based organizational engineering

- Social analysis methods based on sensor data

- Sensor-based real-time feedback systems

- Mobile phones in social computing

Paper selection process:

Authors are invited to submit a 2 page position paper or a 4 page technical paper that are not being considered in another forum. Submission should include the title, author(s), affiliation(s), e-mail address(es), tel/fax numbers, abstract, and postal address(es) on the first page.

Submitted papers must be in PDF format and conform to the ACM publication format. For templates and examples follow the link: http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html. Use the template with the permission block, conference location, copyright line, etc. Please include ACM Computing Classification categories and terms as indicated (http://www.acm.org/about/class/1998). The same template should be used for abstract and paper. The official language of the Workshop is English.

Please submit your manuscript to: communicator@media.mit.edu by August 28, 2009

Submitted papers will be evaluated by their relevance to the topic, novelty and scientific contribution. Once a paper has been accepted, at least one author is required to attend the conference and present the paper. Electronic submission of manuscripts (in PDF format) is required. Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the workshop.
