Mandala / PureJoy performance at SIGGRAPH 2006, in the Computer-Mediated Performance area of the SIGGRAPH Art Gallery :: Mandala visualization software for structured improvisation, acoustic instruments and PureJoy/AudioPint platform for expressive sound play

The Mandala / PureJoy performance at Siggraph 2006 was a structured improvisation, directed by Ben Vigoda's Mandala software/visualization and executed on acoustic instruments and Merrill's PureJoy/AudioPint system for expressive sound play. The setlist for the performance/presentation was:

  • Never Grumbling But Sometimes (machine-generated arrangement of Ben Vigoda's piece, performed on acoustic instruments)
  • EMI at MIT workshop recap (discussion of the John Zorn residency with the inventmusic crew in 2004)
  • Discussion of standard Jazz Improvisation
  • Swing Gitane (performance with acoustic instruments as an example of Jazz Improvisation)
  • Discussion of Games for Song (GfS is Vigoda's book of musical activities)
  • Performance of 'Hey' game (demonstration of standard "around-the-circle" improvisation)
  • Discussion of history of Game-Based Musical Improvisation
  • Leonard Bernstein, Lerdahl and Jackendoff (hierarchical representation of music)
  • Grilled Cheese Sandwich example (hierarchical task organization)
