_______________________PAST

DJ I ROBOT uses a PC, several micro-controllers, and an advanced "motion control" system to automatically mix, scratch, and search a pair of custom vinyl records on the robotic phonographs.

It can spin the platters at speeds up to 800 RPM, and has an advanced database system that analyzes and processes current information, hints from the operator, and an "expert system" of early DJ techniques.

07.15.03 --> Thanks to Eyebeam [http://www.eyebeam.org/] in NYC for a chance to spin in front of so many robot breatheren.

12.01.02 --> We are happy to announce the recruitment of human Lucy Mendel, aka DJ Bean Sprout, who hacks without remorse.

Okay, so it's been over a year since we updated the site. So many 12"s, so little time.

First off, big props to Spooky, who's been very, very good to us. It's a rare DJ who isn't afraid of the machinic phylum, but Muad’Dib Miller recognizes the Spice when he tastes it.

The system will be crunching numbers at The Appliance of Science 9ish at the Cellar -- 991 Mass Ave, Cambridge, MA, Saturday, July 13, 2002.

Our affective subroutine is excited about a November event in LA, Turnament [www.turnament.com], where the robot will be sharing the stage with Kool Herc, Grandmixer DXT, Grand Wizard Theodore, Kid Koala, VinylVideo, and many more. This looks to be a massive reflection on the art, so try to make it.

Other shows in Nagoya, Osaka, .FR and elsewhere coming up, please stay tuned.

We are happy to announce the addition to our crack programming team of human Galen Pickard, aka Word, our new secretary of state machines. Pickard has added much functionality to the system.

DJ I, ROBOT is the first random-access, fully analog robotic dj system.
02.10.98 --> Construction begins on version 1.0. System used two stepper motors, and hacked-out tone arms broken out of used plastic table. Stepper motors controlled by basic stamp and potentiometer speed controls.

04.15.98 --> First public performance of the system rocks Southern Cali.

06.29.00 --> Construction begins on version 2.0. New system uses PID-controlled servo motors and an rs-485 network.

09.01.00 --> Bill Rooney of Panasonic donates 5 SL-1200 tone arms.

10.01.00 --> Jeremi Sudol and Jonathan Girroir join project, begin coding.

01.01.01 --> Sequencing and composing of c++ code nears completion. Work begins on performance algorithms.

01.22.01 --> 80 copies of the first dataset are pressed.

02.06.01 --> Transmediale.

03.03.01 --> Revisions of host interface, electical noise supression, and retuning PID filters.

04.20.01 --> Opening party, Boston Cyberarts Festival

04.21.01 --> Beat Mechanix competition against DJ Josh Gabriel, NYC. Josh schooled us. Our calculations predict that the robot will be able to beat him in a rematch 1 year, 5 months, 4 days, and 23 minutes after our first battle.

04.27.01 --> DJ I, Robot Sound System VS dj Licious at Mobius, Boston. Street party, no arrests were made. Special thanks to James Baumgartner, Curtis Bahn, Joni Hallibi, Jason Murphy, Scott Smallwood, and all the others who made it work.

10.05.02 --> Also Sprach DJ Zarathustra -- NWEAMO festival.

01.19.02 --> Stuttgart Filmwinter. Thanks to Uli, Melanie, and all the others who made this a memorable performance.
