Interests 

I am interested in the development of technologies that foster creative and collaborative learning experiences and empower people through self-expression. I am currently working on projects involving social software, on-line communities and mobile devices for education and the developing world.

Projects 

  • ScratchR: the YouTube of programming. Social platform for kids and novices to share programmable media. More than 80,000 projects and 15 million page views in the past months. Currently managing the community and doing analysis of the on-line behavior and interactions of kids (UROPs wanted)
  • Cancer screening with camera phones (new). Working with Dimagi on a D-Lab project using camera phones to help with cancer screening in Zambia.
  • Codecaching. Geocaching game using camera phones by scanning Semacodes.
  • AskMobi. Web-based tool for kids to do social science surveys over SMS (with L. Sylvan).

  • Conceptualized and lead development of the Scratch on-line community, a website for kids. More than 100,000 projects have been contributed by 70,000 people, generating more than 15 million page views from worldwide visitors in one year

  • Designed the architecture of ScratchR platform using CakePHP, MySQL, Linux and Apache.
  • Lead and designed programming and invention workshops for kids and adults using Scratch and PicoCrickets in the US, Mexico, Costa Rica and the UK
