Ali Hashmi is a data scientist/researcher/software architect working on creating data analysis tools using machine learning, natural language processing (NLP) and corpus linguistics. He holds research affiliate appointments with MIT MediaLab and Harvard Law School ILSP's SHARIAsource project. In his role, he is involved in developing discourse analysis tools using machine learning and natural language processing on legal and media corpora. Ali actively collaborates on NLP-heavy projects that are part of Media Cloud, which is an open-source content analysis tool developed by the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and the Center for Civic Media at MIT. Aligraduated from MIT Media Lab with an MS degree. Prior to MIT, Ali was a McCormick scholar at Medill (Northwestern, Chicago) and a Knight fellow at the Globe Lab (Boston Globe, The New York Times Company). He also received an MSJ degree from Northwestern University and a BS degree in Computer Science from the University of Western Ontario. In the past, he has worked as a software architect and development manager for Bell Canada for more than a decade, leading business intelligence and data integration teams in Toronto, Montreal, London (Ontario) and Bangalore.
