Gary Dierking has had an adventurous life and a prolific career
designing and building boats.
Unfortunately the boat he lived on was robbed and the box containing
most of his photos was among the things stolen.
He took these pictures of three-board canoes in Rarotonga. He says
"there are many similar canoes
in Saipan where they are usually Philipine style double outriggers."

Notice the palm fronds over the dugout canoe. They're prone to crack in
the sun, especially in the bows where the hull's shape crosses the
grain.

We took Ulua out for a sail. You can just see his trailer in the 2nd
picture.
The canoe rests on carpeted cradles and the outrigger leans up against
a bar, where it is lashed.

Bird houses made from big plastic net floats.

There's a campground here. They spare their road vehicles by having a
tractor or four-wheeler just for boat launching.
If that's too much trouble or the boat's smaller they'll put it off on
smaller hand trolley that's just for launching.

Gary made this solo canoe with the same underwater shape as Ulua. It's
got a small rudder and a very nifty pedal linkage borrowed from a
glider design.
Very easy to paddle and fast, not to mention pretty.
We had a relaxing time catching up on our solutions to all the world's
problems. Watched a bit of the NZ news.
Some Israeli agents had just gotten busted trying to get New Zealand
passports.
"We four million New Zealanders and our passports are admired and
respected the world over. We will treat it as a very serious matter if
devious persons attempt to exploit our hard-earned goodwill to
nefarious ends." Or somesuch announcement by the NZ president. Spies
and ninjas don't do well in New Zealand.
When French commandos blew up the Rainbow Warrior they were caught
right away.
Not for boating around in wetsuits, which everyone does, but by acting
sneaky in a country where people don't ordinarily do that.

Eventually it was time to go. I took the bus back to Wellington and
stayed in a highrise hostel
across from the train station.
This window washer was leaning out further before I got the camera out.

I saw this petty-cash box laying on the bottom near a pier, so I
stripped and dove for it. There was nothing inside but reciepts.
So there is crime here after all. I left it at with the desk workers at
a nearby museum. It'll be easy enough for the cops to find out who lost
it,
but I doubt that'll do anyone any good. Whoever lost it might need the
reciepts
though.

Workers installing a tribute to the old royalty of the area.

Ornamental fender made from a tire on a barge in Wellington harbor.
Then on to the airport and Australia. This time I didn't have so many
insects, bark, wood, etc. etc. with me and got into Australia more
easily.
After a fine time in Oz, back to the states, where after a couple of
months of hassling with the best and most irritating medical system in
the world I managed to get cured of my Schistosomiasis. Praziquantel
aka Biltricide is the drug that cured me this time. Finally.
THE END
