54 beautiful scenes of Shimokita >>back
Part of the outcome of Urbantyphoon, a four-day design workshop held in Tokyo, Japan in the summer of 2006. I designed a set of 54 postcards to be used by the local organization "Save The Shimokita (STSK)" for raising the awareness of a problematic new master plan for the future of the energetic Shimokita area of Tokyo.

::the work

We worked with the local community of Shimokita and selected 54 places/objects/scenes that we think are representative of the energy and humanity of this area. I designed and made a set of postcards to be used by the local community and the STSK group for distributing the beauty and knowledge of this neighborhood.

The front of a postcard is the image of one of the 54 places. On the back of a postcard is a portion of the map of Shimokita. By collecting the whole 54 cards, one gets a map that can be used to dérive (French for "drift," a term defined by the Situationists as the "technique of locomotion without a goal"), to detour, and to discover. We designed a logotype for these 54 sites of "cultural importance," while the certificates are given by the local community instead of governmental authorities.

We found it interesting when we showed these cards to passersby in the neighborhood; no matter they are tourists or even local people who have been there for tens of years, they found new places and objects in this set of postcards. We believe it means a new map can be produced if we seek for collective intelligence from the community. And it is a map that provides a brand new experiences for enjoyment.
