Creativity and Learning

The Creativity and Learning research project explores creativity and learning dynamics with computational media.

The research focuses on, first, understanding how students use digital tools to improve their creativity and, second, on understanding the learning and collaboration dynamics in new media environments, both in a co-presence situation and in remote collaborative environments.

The project is based in three complementary steps:

[1] The first step consists in doing interviews with experts in the fields of education and new media. These interviews help us to investigate the relationship between creativity and learning, especially focusing on the pedagogical issues emerging with the implementation of new collaborative learning environments and with the use of computational tools for education.

This stage provides a theoretical framework in thinking of the evolution of learning and creativity with digital media.

[2] The second aspect focuses on new media and computational tools that encourage creativity and learning in the educational setting. In this step, we elaborate on the communication media and digital tools that are used during the classes.

With these descriptions, we provide a general overview of the tools used for creativity and learning in our uniquely digital environments.

[3] The last stage of the project consists in doing research on MIT classes that use particular innovative educational settings, implementing new learning environments to promote creativity and learning. Using qualitative research methodology and ethnographic observation we try to understand the creativity process and collective intelligence dynamics in remote collaborative learning environments.

We have put together a small introductory video, in either a large (5.3M) or smaller (1.2) size. The length of the movie is roughly 2 minutes.
