Music in the Stata Center, Spring 2007 :: JamiOki game engine for musical improvisation, and PureJoy instrument for vocal expression
David Merrill, Ben Vigoda, Shawn Hershey, and Joe Rothermich
The JamiOki and PureJoy systems were installed in the main lobby of the MIT Stata Center for 2 months in the Spring of 2007, for continuous public use.
Players could begin a musical game by picking up a PureJoy controller and stepping on a 'dance-dance-revolution' floor mat, then following on-screen instructions. The JamiOki game engine would guide participants in musical interactions with each other, creating collaborative loops, layers, and expressive manipulations of their own voice.
Throughout the installation, the system was used by students, parents, children and midnight wanderers in search of their own beats, harmonies and on-the-fly composition.
