update: I received word that this design was used November 26, 2007 at a scouting event in Delta, BC, and the correspondent was kind enough to send me a few photos.

Rope-Maker: This is a project that I made when I was a kid - documented here because I still think it's an interesting do-it-yourself project for someone of any age.

Click on the "making the device" and "making the rope" images to the left for full drawings, and click here for an image gallery of a ropemaking session.

The basic materials needed are:

  • one-inch by two-inch strips of wood
  • screw-hooks
  • screws
  • washers
The tools needed are
  • saw
  • drill
The screws and screw hooks actually anchor into the small, rotating center pieces. The holes that they go through in the larger wood pieces should be wide enough so that they can turn freely.
