Scan an object using the 3D scanner and print it using the Zcorp or the stratasys printers

What would Picasso do if he had access to the Minolta Laser Scanner, the Stratasys FDM 2000 Printer and the Z-Corp Z406 Printer??

Minolta Laser Scanner

.          Software: Raindrop Geomagic Studio

Stratasys FDM 2000

.          Prints ABS plastic

.          Does not print color

.          Save files as .stl

.          Good resolution (0.010”)

.          Fairly slow

ZCorp Z406

.          Software: Zprint

.          Uses plaster

.          Prints color

.          Save files as .wrl

.          Very good resolution (0.004”)

.          Much faster than the Stratasys

.          BUT you need to be very very careful with the parts when the printing is complete. Use a brush to uncover the parts, and wax them whenever possible.

My project: Ayah au beret rouge

.          A minuscule humble attempt to play Picasso

.          I tried to recreate Picasso’s Femme au beret rouge using the “rapid” prototyping tools

.          I scanned my face on the Minolta 4 times trying to capture time with different facial expressions

.          I registered the scans with intentional mistakes and inaccuracies

.          After filling the wholes, reducing noise, wrapping the scans, registering, filling the wholes, decimating.. I exported the file as wrl.

.          In 3dstudio max, I created colored figures on the model.

Problems Problems

Modeling

Needless to say, my 3D model turned out nothing like Picasso’s masterpiece…Apparently, Geomagic studio is a lot smarter than you would expect, it is really hard to make mistakes when registering scans! The result was distorted and weird looking… I guess it did look like a cubist painting…

Printing

After Sergio and I finished our models, we set the Zcorp to print. Lack of plaster, lack of wash fluis, lack of color fluid… were the simple solvable problems….The job started, and needed 13 hours, from 6 am to 7pm… everything was going great… until, 5.30 pm, we got an email from the zcorp: Zcorp error. Job interrupted..AAAAAAHHHHH

My advice… never leave your assignment till Saturday night… especially not this one!
